University Packing List: What Do I Need To Take to Uni?

A blank notebook for writing out a university packing list as a university student asks themselves what do I need to take to uni

If, like me, you’re heading off to uni this September, you might be looking for advice on what to take for uni. Well, I started making lists a good couple of months ago (apparently list-making is how I channel my excitement) and I’ve watched every YouTube video and read every blog you can find. So, after sifting through all the advice, below is my university packing list so you can be prepared for an exciting year ahead.

“Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit.” -Conrad Hilton

Watch my first-year uni haul where I show all of my uni essentials (and not so essentials…)

What to pack for your uni kitchen:

  • Water bottle
  • Thermos
  • Crockery and cutlery (if you can, buy crockery and cutlery that will look different to everyone else’s so they don’t get mixed up!)
  • Frying pans and saucepan (decide which sizes are best for you and what you eat)
  • Glasses
  • Tupperware
  • Chopping board
  • Knife
  • Scissors
  • Spatula
  • Colander/sieve
  • Measuring jug/cups/spoons
  • Can opener
  • Potato peeler
  • Baking tray
  • Baking sheet
  • Tea towels
  • Cafetiere (I’m a french press girl, but swap this out for any coffee/tea making instruments you use)
  • Mugs
  • Toaster (your uni may provide this)
  • Kettle (your uni may provide this)
  • Bag clips (an often forgotten essential!)

Tip: Double-check what the university provides you with so you know exactly what you need 🙂

What to pack for your university bedroom:

  • Duvet (bedding isn’t usually provided, but you may be able to rent it from the university if you don’t want to buy!)
  • Pillows
  • Duvet set
  • Sheet
  • Mattress protector (an optional extra that may give you some comfort)
  • Hangers (you can often ask for a bag of spare hangers at retail stores)
  • A mirror (over-door hanging mirrors are great for space-saving and usually pretty cheap!)
  • Blankets & cushions (see what you can find at home and ask around if anyone has any they don’t use – you might be surprised what you can find!)
  • Doorstop (not essential, but nice for being sociable, especially in the first few weeks)
  • Photos & prints, decor, plants, etc.
  • Clothes, shoes, bags, etc

What cleaning supplies to pack for uni:

  • Clothes airer
  • Toilet rolls (get these before you go so you don’t have to rush out on moving day!)
  • All-purpose spray (you may need specific ones if you have lots of wood or glass, but an all-purpose spray is a great all-rounder!)
  • Limescale spray (not essential, but works wonders for metal shower heads and my mum badgered me until I bought it)
  • Cleaning cloths
  • Bleach
  • Laundry liquid & comfort
  • Washing up liquid
  • Washing up sponges/scourers

Top tip! If you’re getting to university by car, but won’t have one once you’re there, buy big cleaning supplies in advance so you don’t have to carry all of them home from your first shopping trip.

What to pack for your uni bathroom:

  • Towel(s)
  • Hand soap
  • Laundry basket and/or laundry bag
  • Your usual toiletries (suggestions below)
  • A small make-up mirror
  • Flip flops (if your sharing a bathroom)

What to pack for studying at uni:

  • Textbooks (only buy in advance what you know is essential and try to buy second-hand!)
  • Pen case (remember you’ll need a clear one for exams!)
  • Stationary (ruler, pens, pencil, rubbers, staples, stapler, hole punch, etc)
  • File folders/wallets/etc
  • Notebooks/refill pads
  • Drawing pins (most uni rooms have drawing boards)
  • Whiteboard (I love working on a whiteboard, so this is an essential for me!)
  • Planner/agenda

What toiletries to pack for uni:

  • Razor (and charger, if electric)
  • Medication (any prescriptions, painkillers, plasters)
  • Tweezer
  • Nail clippers
  • Make-up
  • Make-up wipes (I have and love these reusable ones!)
  • Hairdryer & hot tools (straighteners, curlers, etc)
  • Hairbrush/comb
  • Hand soap
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Moisturisers and skin products
  • Shower gels
  • Sanitary products
  • Suncream, if you’re lucky enough to be somewhere sunny

What tech to pack for uni:

  • Phone & charger (and spare chargers for your rucksack)
  • Headphones + earphones (and charger)
  • Laptop (laptop case and charger)
  • Extension leads (uni rooms are notorious for badly placed sockets!)
  • Mouse & mouse mat
  • Speaker/smart speaker
  • TV (if you want, they’re allowed in many unis but do take up a lot of space!)
  • Any gaming consoles/hobby equipment

There you have it, my full university packing list! For a look at everything I bought for university (essentials and not!), check out my first-year university haul (top of this page) over on my YouTube channel.

Best of luck to all of you on your new journeys! Love, Ella-Rose xx
