It’s not so much that I believe each of us enters the Earth with a purpose or a mission, but I do think that each of us is armed with the ability and the desire to spend our lives creating one. Whatever that purpose might be, it will be completely unique – something no one else except you, in your chaotic concoction of talents, desires, strengths, and weaknesses could have done. That, to me, is the beauty of life and being human. So, I encourage you to take life with both hands, using these 7 ways to be more ambitious.
“Become a millionaire not for the million dollars, but for what it will make of you to achieve it.” – Jim Rohn
If you want to be more ambitious, you need an ambitious dream to chase. Set your sights high and follow up. Set your goals and remember to be very clear on what they are. It’s almost inevitable that they’ll change, but it’s still important to be as clear as you can be right now to set you on the right path for now. An idea is only as good as its plan, which is only as good as its execution. Essentially, put your ideas out into the world and get working on them.
This is by far one of my favourite parts of any process. I’m a planner, through and through and I’ll have 90% of my excitement and motivation at this stage – which is great for planning, but provides a struggle when it comes to executing. Putting everything down on paper will help you feel more motivated and inspired, as well as giving you a list of actions to start getting through.
Nobody can chase your goals but you, so make your plan and go after it.
Show yourself that you’re capable
A lot of the time, the number one thing holding us back from chasing and achieving our goals is ourselves. Show up for yourself. This, I think, is where planning becomes really important because it’s the difference between an idea and a goal. Once you have a plan, you have no reason not to start checking off the points between you and your goal.
Proving to yourself that you’re a capable person becomes exponentially greater with time. The more you see yourself accomplish, the more your confidence will grow and the quicker you’ll improve. Scarcity mindsets will point out all the times we’ve failed, but an abundance mentality will remind us of all the times we’ve achieved, so focus on those times you do well and take every so-called ‘failure’ as just another opportunity to learn.
Don’t be afraid of failing
Which brings me onto my next point, which is to never be afraid of failing. If you want to be more ambitious, you’re going to need to take some risks and do a lot of learning. Failure is a chance to learn.
Only a mistake not learned from is a failure.
This year I’ve been teaching myself to do handstands, it’s a small fun goal I set myself at the start of the year, and it’s resulted in a lot of bruises. But the progress, as it’s something very physical, has been easy to see. Every time I’ve got my balance wrong has taught me where ‘right’ is, and that’s true for every challenge, goal or ‘failure’ you’ll ever come up against.
Of course, it’s easier said than done, but once you get in the habit of that thought process, I promise you, you’ll start seeing results immediately. To start, I’d recommend noting your lessons down. Every time you mess something up or get something wrong, jot down the lesson on your phone. Over time, your mind will jump straight to searching for the lesson and you’ll be up and trying again in no time.
Feed your inspiration
Fuel your creativity with new inspiration. The more you open yourself up to new content, literature, films, videos, news, etc., the more opportunity you’ll have for new ideas and growth. The best way to dream big is to expand yourself as a person and keep coming up with fresh ideas, the more you advance and grow yourself, the more your ideas, plans and doings are going to grow too.
This is something I took a long while to learn. Like I said earlier, I’m a planner, so whilst I have a lot of motivation, it can fizzle out when it comes to actually ‘doing’. But a lot of the time, motivation comes from action, rather than the other way round. If you get started with something and see yourself begin to make progress, you’ll start getting more and more motivated to stick to it. But that initial push, a lot of the time, is down to you and you alone.
Be happy with where you are now
One thing to never forget, no matter how lofty and humungous your dreams get, is to appreciate exactly where you are right now. It may not be where you want to be, but it’s still part of the journey. When we lose ourselves too deeply in our dreams, we can become unhappy with our current lives and rush through, missing the journey, or becoming so discontent that we never chase our dreams anyway.
You have everything you need to be more ambitious. Now you just need to believe and want to get started. Your dreams are unique and only you can achieve them, afterall. The life you want to live is exactly that, so start living.
